In the mid of last year, Karina conducted a training on Volunteer Management which was attended by 17 Caritas Dioceses. The purpose of this training was to increase the capacity of volunteers who are often directly involved in working with the Karina’s network in Indonesia, both at the parish, diocesan and assisted community levels. In this event, participants had the opportunity to visit the Al Qodir Islamic Boarding School, Cangkringan and the Parish of St Petrus-Paulus, Babadan to learn about the management of volunteers in Mount Merapi area.

Capacity building on volunteer management was not only received by Caritas Dioceses, but also by Eva S. Sitorus and Riana. Both of them were participating staffs of Karina to the Advanced Volunteer Management Training, held on 18-20 February 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand.

There were 32 participants from 11 countries attending the training which was organized by EU Aid Volunteers, EAC-EA, Caritas Austria and Caritas Asia, and it was part of Peach Project 2018 – 2020. Besides Karina, there are also several participating institutions, namely Caritas Nepal, Caritas India, Caritas Myanmar, Caritas Pakistan, Caritas Bangladesh, Caritas Mongolia, Karina, NASSA/Caritas Philippines, Caritas Czech and Caritas Romania.

In this training, Christina Rigman (facilitator) emphasized the importance of specific tools for volunteers that can be applied, both in normal situations and during emergency response. An institutional policies and readiness to have a volunteer in an organization are absolutely needed, since the selection process, trainings, to the supervision and evaluation based on field of duty.

Karina is very grateful to attend this training, because though already has a Volunteer’s Guidance in Emergency Response (ER), a specific tool for national and international volunteers still needs to be developed, either for normal situation or in ER period.

Hopefully, lesson learned during this training can be a motivation to develop the existing Volunteer’s Guidelines into Karina’s institutional policy. ●
